The HBO Max Green Lantern series is reportedly still in development, despite Berlanti Productions' other DC show Strange Adventures getting axed.
A new report claims that HBO Max's big budget, effects-heavy Green Lantern series is still in active development.
Unnamed sources close to the production recently insisted that the DC Comics adaptation continues to make slow yet steady progress, according to The Hollywood Reporter. These same sources attributed Green Lantern's protracted development cycle to the superhero show's extensive use of visual effects, which apparently makes it the most expensive series ever mounted by Berlanti Productions. They also confirmed that stars Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine are still onboard and that Superman & Lois director Lee Toland Krieger will helm the first two episodes.

Warner Bros. recently axed Berlanti Productions' other DC project for HBO Max, Strange Adventures, sparking speculation that the studio might pull the plug on Green Lantern, too. Filmmaker Kevin Smith announced Strange Adventures' cancelation during a recent podcast appearance, revealing that he first learned the show was scrapped from Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco. "I got a call the other day from Eric before all of this story broke and he was just like 'Strange Adventures is officially dead,' and I was like 'What the fuck, are you serious?!'" he said. At the same time, Smith made it clear that, despite his personal disappointment, he accepted that Warner Bros.' decision reflected its new plan for its DC-related properties.
Green Lantern apparently still fits within this plan, given the series is still in production. This will no doubt come as a relief to the show's ever-growing acting line-up, with several more undisclosed Green Lantern roles reportedly cast in May 2022. These unidentified actors will join Wittrock and Irvine, who are set to portray Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, respectively. Irvine previously joked about his costume in the series, joking that he might not fit into Alan Scott's superhero spandex. The star also confirmed he had yet to try on his Green Lantern outfit and noted the show's costume designers expected it would take at least two months to make.

The cast and costumes aren't the only things being finalized, either. Writer Marc Guggenheim recently confirmed that he's currently working on the script for the Green Lantern Season 1 finale, adding that the series was "a really, really cool project." HBO Max has yet to officially confirm the release date for Green Lantern's first season, however, Entertainment Identifier Registry information has surfaced online that indicates the platform is eying a 2024 release window.
