A 1955 Ferrari sports car, driven by legendary racers including Carroll Shelby, is headed to the auction block with an estimated value of between US$25 million and US$30 million.
The Ferrari 410 Sport Spider is just one of the two examples equipped with a 24-spark plug 4.9-liter V12, and is one of a select few Ferrari models with coachwork both designed and built by the brand’s famous designer Sergio Scaglietti, according to RM Sotheby’s.
The auction house will feature the Ferrari as a top lot at its upcoming auction, slated for Aug. 18-20, in Monterey, Calif.
The lot also includes the first (1956) and last (1958) trophies won by Shelby in the car, along with the original 1957 Nassau racing license plate, RM Sotheby’s said.
Shelby (1923-2012), a Texas-born automotive designer, entrepreneur, and racing driver, “won more races in this car than any other car he ever drove, catapulting him to racing fame,” says Ethan Gibson, a spokesman for RM Sotheby’s.
There is a handwritten quote from Shelby on the original gas tanks that states, “Mr. [Enzo] Ferrari told me that this was the best Ferrari he ever built,” Gibson says.
The car was also raced by Phill Hill, Juan Manuel Fangio, Eugenio Castellotti, Masten Gregory, Richie Ginther, and other legendary drivers. In total, it entered 40 races with 11 victories and 19 podium finishes from 1956-58.
Following its racing career, the Ferrari has been owned by prominent car collectors around the world, including, briefly, hotelier Bill Marriott. The current owner acquired the car in 2006, according to RM Sotheby’s, which declined to disclose the American collector’s identity.
“Automobiles that can participate in vintage races, events, and rallies are increasing in value and are gaining interest from collectors around the world,” Gibson says. “The ideal buyer is someone that can appreciate the history of this magnificent car and the legendary drivers who were behind the wheel.”
