Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, or HCCI, is a gas igniting system for internal combustion engines that uses an electrical spark between a charge and the oxygen in combustion air. Like other types of spark ignition, HCCI uses the exhaust gas pressure to provide a spark, but it uses a charge. Unlike spark plugs, HCCI does not plug an opening; it simply ignites the fuel and oxidant gases in the combustion chamber through an electric spark. This system is also called a self-induction system because it self-installs itself.
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition is an alternative to the air induction ignition system. Unlike the induction (fuel and oxygen) induction systems, HCCI uses a charge on the intake manifold along with a thin blanket of gas to provide a source of ignition. The system works well with diesel (rubber piston engines). The main advantages of using a charge-composition ignition system are that it requires no combustion chamber maintenance and ignition is instant with most diesel. Some disadvantages of HCCI are that it needs precise starting and ignition timing to achieve an optimal fuel economy and ignition performance and that it is wasteful of energy.
